What is documentary wedding photography?

Documentary wedding photography is a style of photography that captures candid and authentic moments throughout the wedding day. The photographer aims to document the day as it unfolds naturally, without staging shots or directing the couple and guests. This style of photography is all about capturing the emotions, interactions, and details that make each wedding unique. The result is a collection of images that tell the story of the day in a natural and unobtrusive way. This style can also be called editorial photography, although editorial photography can direct and stage situations.

The importance of capturing authentic moments

Authentic moments are what make this particular style of wedding photography so special. These are the moments that can’t be staged or recreated, but instead happen naturally throughout the day. Capturing these moments allows the couple to relive the emotions and memories of their wedding day for years to come. It’s important for the photographer to be observant and ready to capture these moments as they happen, without interrupting or directing the couple or guests. The result is a collection of images that truly reflect the unique story of the couple and their wedding day.

Being unobtrusive and observant

One of the key skills we have is the ability to be unobtrusive and observant. This means blending in with the crowd and capturing moments as they happen without interrupting or directing the couple or guests. It’s important for us to be aware of what’s happening around our couples and guests and anticipate moments before they happen. This allows us to be in the right place at the right time to capture those authentic moments that make documentary wedding photography so special. Remember, the goal is to tell the story of the couple and their wedding day through your images, not to create a series of posed or staged shots.

The ceremony was at Chesapeake Church, in Huntingtown MD,  and the dinner and bouncing reception was held in the upstairs and downstairs ballrooms at Herrington on the Bay.
